DAY 2 - AIRPORT FRANKFURT
SYNOPSIS: The uncertainties continue - Putting one foot before the other. I am still nowhere.
Nobody seems to know anything least of all me. For days before my flight I called the 800 number for Lufthansa in the US and for days - to my amazement - I was told that the 1 PM flight to Cairo for which I was scheduled was going. I could not figure out how, since this was in direct violation of the curfew, but who would argue with the experts.
When I checked my luggage in Detroit yesterday, the LH staff would only check me through to Frankfurt claiming that LH had suspended all flights to Egypt. Nobody but Egypt Air was flying. If LH flies, I am flying was my last motto - I thought my decision had been made for me and going to Egypt on my ticket was now impossible. But quite the contrary! LH is still flying to Cairo, every day, but for days now the 1 PM flight took off 6 hours early to comply with the official curfew, just as I thought it would have to. What the heck? In the days of computers and global communications how could there be so much misinformation and all from various LH staff?
Since I missed that early flight, LH put me up in a nice hotel with lunch, dinner and breakfast included. I will be able to rest after a sleepless night and be on my way to Cairo after all - rested and ready to face the reality on the ground. I will make the next decision there. "You will be fine, honey" rings in my ears. We shall see if the guy at the Pension Roma still thinks that. If not, there is always Turkish Air to take me to Istanbul. I might have to rough it for a bit, but that is the least of my worries. There are no inland flights and no trains in and out of Cairo. I will have to spend a few days there or get on by car. I put my trust in the goodness of people.
It's history in the making. What an opportunity! Let's go for it.
