EYEWITNESS ACCOUNT OF THE EGYPTIAN UPRISING
Untold stories of a year long struggle for freedom.
Shimaa’ will speak on a wide variety of topics such as the role of women and social media in the Arab Spring, the experience of being an activist in Egypt, the current situation in the face of ongoing military control, and the economical, political, and cultural contexts of the Middle East in relation to the uprisings that have taken place.
Shimaa’ willl also present excerpts from the documentaries by Micah and Marie-Helene that feature her activity in the Egyptian revolution and Occupy movement.
The talk will be followed by a question and answer period.
Who is Shimaa’ Helmy?
Shimaa’ is an activist and blogger from Cairo, Egypt. She organized and participated in the Jan. 25 uprising from day one. She is currently in the U.S. on a speaking tour sharing her experiences in the Egyptian uprising, and is also working to promote the forthcoming Four Corners Media documentary film IF, which features her and other activists, and gives an insider view into the initial uprising and ongoing situation in Egypt.
Since she came to the U.S. on October 17th, she has given several lectures with Micah Garen and Marie-Helene Carleton (filmmakers) at Yale, Harvard, Rutgers University, George Washington University, New York University, Simmons College, and Tufts University.
Shimaa’ has also conducted several Arab Spring teach-ins at UC Berkeley, and Stanford.
Shimaa’ is a recent university graduate. She holds a B.S. in biotechnology from MISR University for Science and Technology.
Apart from her activism and scientific research, she has worked as a teacher of Arabic for non-native speakers, an English-Arabic translator, interpreter, and a freelance writer.

I am happy to welcome Shimaa’ Helmy in Ann Arbor for a special week-long visit.
